We’re pretty familiar with the standard US conference boxed lunch so we were excited to see what the Japanese version of the conference hoagie, meat and mayo packets would be. It wasn’t bad. It wasn’t great. I was delighted by the little bottle of soy sauce hanging off the side and the green tea juiceContinue reading “Japanese conference boxed lunch”

MTS Conference: The plenaries
We are attending the Marine Technology Societies joint conference with Oceans and The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers at the Kobe International Conference Center. The opening ceremonies and plenary speeches for the conference were fascinating. There were speakers from each organization who conducted a greeting and then a speech. I had to hand itContinue reading “MTS Conference: The plenaries”
Adventures in Kyoto
We registered for the conference and had an afternoon free so we ventured ouy into Kobe for a short jaunt. Kaety found a shrine on the map that wasn’t far from the train station – so we had our chance to conquer the scary kiosks that had thwarted us the night before. Thankfully colors andContinue reading “Adventures in Kyoto”
Arrived!
My bio-clock had me at about 2 am in Osaka and I was having to navigate a bus, a ferry, another bus, and finally a wall of train ticket kiosks. We just stared at the kiosks and our brains just went into sleep deprived psychosis. I couldn’t manage the train or anymore decisions or ambiguity.Continue reading “Arrived!”
Camels!
We got off the plane in Osaka and wound through the weird voluminous international terminal spaces that seem to belong to every airport. We hit the first choke point which seemed to be all about disease screening. I saw the signs and whipped out my camera. Kaety was giving me warnings not to take photosContinue reading “Camels!”
They Notice…
Symone announced her intent to go to the Vegas dance at the middle school. She worked on building the outfit for almost an hour. There were many consultations: dice cocktail dress, red or teal Converse, pearl choker or black hair bow, shorts or tights? Once she got the outfit set she had about a halfContinue reading “They Notice…”
OnWakeUpTime scripting error
6-year old humans and computers have a lot in common. When you give them literal instruction they follow them. We told Emmett that when he woke up he could open his only his stocking and nothing else until everyone was up. We thought we had all the bases covered. At 12:20 am we realized ourContinue reading “OnWakeUpTime scripting error”
One for Santa, two for me
The boys helped Kaety make the cookies for Santa…and by ‘help’ I mean eat all the dough before it could get formed into a cookie. Noble was wearing it all by the end of the process.
4H Holiday Fun
Our family loves 4H holiday events! Early last week we hit the 4H Holiday craft event at the armory. Some of us glued, painted and glittered through each station fully sucking the marrow out of each experience…others of us ran frantically from station to station dipping in long enough to sample the essence ofContinue reading “4H Holiday Fun”
The Slow Goodbye (no photos)
I spend a lot of time in the meeting rooms at the DHS office. The walls are peppered with posters meant to lend hope, guidance, caution or wisdom to the highly diverse audiences that use the rooms. I have to admit, I wander off focus a lot during trainings and find myself staring at theContinue reading “The Slow Goodbye (no photos)”
